Last week I promised you a grilled cheese sandwich… I had to delay it a few days. And, for that, I’m sorry! But, I hope it will be worth the wait!
Lately I’ve been on a bit cheese kick. I think it’s because I got my fill of sweets around the holidays. It’s hard to believe since normally I am all about desserts. But, I’ve actually gotten kind of sick of sweets. So, instead, I’ve turned to cheese. I’ve been making special trips to Wegmans to peruse the large cheese selection (much better than my usual grocery store) and snacking on cheese and fruit after dinner instead of dessert.
Even with all of the new cheeses I’ve tried, though, I keep going back to one old favorite… I cannot get enough of the Kerrygold Aged Cheddar with Irish Whiskey. If you have never tried it, go out and buy a block. Right now. It’s rich and creamy, and packed with flavor. I especially love it with some fruit.
Grilled cheese is a lunchtime favorite at my house… Both my hubby and I work from home, and most days we eat lunch together. Since I’m not a big fan of cold food (especially in the winter!), I tend to make grilled sandwiches quite a bit. And, grilled cheese is at the top of my list.
A lot of times, I stick to the basics with grilled cheese, opting for slices of mozzarella or provolone. But, last week when I had some leftover sourdough bread, I decided to mix it up a bit and use some of the cheddar cheese I had left over from a cheese plate I had put together the weekend before. Since I love the cheese with fruit, I decided to incorporate it into the sandwich. I sliced up a juicy pear and layered it with the creamy cheese on slices of sourdough bread. It was phenomenal, and quite possibly the best grilled cheese sandwich I’ve ever made.
While it’s not a complicated recipe (and a recipe isn’t really necessary at all), the flavors were just too good not to share. Both my hubby and I were big fans of this grown up grilled cheese, and we hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we did!
Whiskey Cheddar and Pear Grilled Cheese
Makes 2 sandwiches
- 1/2 tablespoon butter
- 4 slices sourdough bread
- 1 anjou pear, core removed and thinly sliced
- 2 ounces Kerrygold Aged Cheddar with Irish Whiskey, cut into thin slices
Melt the butter in a grill pan (with a panini press) over medium heat. Meanwhile, arrange the pear slices and cheese on two slices of bread. Top with the remaining slices of bread. Grill for 3 – 4 minutes on each side, covering with the panini press to flatten the sandwich and hold everything together. Enjoy while the cheese is still warm and gooey!
Grilled cheese with pear sounds delicious but sandwiched between slices of your sourdough must just take this lunch right over the top of wonderful.
Pretty sure this is the best grilled cheese I’ve ever seen!
Looks amazing…I’d love one right now!
Ohhhh. I never heard of that cheese. I have to keep my eye out for it.
My mouth is watering so hard core right now. I *adore* that Whiskey cheddar. It’s one of the best cheeses I’ve ever tasted – and pairing it with pears? Divinity.
I’ve got some Kerrygold in the freezer but I don’t think my cache includes any of ‘this’ cheese and that makes me sad. This sounds like the perfect grilled cheese Jenn. Umm Umm good!
Nothing beats a good grilled cheese, and cheddar is probably one of the best do make one with!
Definitely on my docket to make this sandwich – just have to find the cheese; maybe HEB carries it, I know they stock the Kerrygold butter.
Thanks for sharing.
BTW, my sourdough bread starter turned out great; hopefully today I will make some bread (need for this grilled cheese recipe).
Grilled cheese is SUCH good comfort food this time of year! Yours looks amazing. I need to make some sourdough and soon, I don’t think I’ve ever tried grilled cheese on it.
This is pretty much the perfect looking grilled cheese sandwich. Great flavours!
This looks SO ooey, gooey delicious! What a great comfort food… definitely worth the wait!
Oh my goodness. I almost fell off my chair. I love everything about this and I’m totally putting this cheese on my grocery list so I can make it!!
