Along with the best time of year comes football season… And, I have to admit that I am loving it. I have been waiting all summer for this!
You see, there was a time when I hated football. I really had no interest at all and would roll my eyes at the thought of spending an entire Sunday afternoon watching football. However, when my husband and I were first married, we lived in Baltimore, Maryland, and we started watching the Ravens. Gradually, I started to learn the players names and I started looking forward to the Ravens game each weekend.
While I had developed an interest in football, I wouldn’t say I loved it. I was just learning to tolerate it. That is, until I discovered what it’s all about… Rivalry. My brother is a Steelers fan. For those of you who are Ravens or Steelers fans, you know what I’m talking about. We don’t mix.
So, with the family rivalry to fuel my fire, I began to watch more and more football, calling my brother on the phone to trash talk and never missing a chance to send a celebratory text message when the Ravens scored!
That was 3 or 4 years ago now (I can’t actually remember)… But now, football is as big a part of autumn as apple pie and pumpkins in my household. I can talk intelligently about trades, players, and even other teams (gasp). And, I even bought a Ray Lewis jersey last year that I proudly wear each time the Ravens are playing.
Since I have become such a huge Ravens fan, it only seemed appropriate that I decorate some Ravens cookies, right? My husband has been out of town this weekend, so I thought it would be fun to surprise him with some cookies to enjoy on Monday night during the Ravens game (against the Jets… another big rivalry, though I don’t have any family members who are Jets fans).
I decided to decorate some football helmets and jerseys… It seemed simple enough! Then, once I got started, I realized how detailed the Ravens’ football helmets really are. I started to think about how much easier things would have been if I was a Browns fan… But that’s just not right. I refused to let the cookies beat me, so I spent almost an entire day figuring out how to pipe the logo background in white and then use gel food colors to paint the logo on top. I even used gold luster dust to add the gold accents so that the cookies sparkle (which you can’t really see well in the pictures… take my word for it!). It was a bit tedious, but eventually I figured it out!
Now that the cookies are done… I think it’s time to relax and watch some football. I am so ready for Monday night!
Darling! Can you make me some Charger’s cookies? ;)
I’m not a football fan but I’m married to a man who loves watching football. In the summer I’m a golf widow, in the Fall a football widow :) You did an amazing job on these cookies Jen. Love the helmets! Your husband is going to thoroughly enjoy the game with you and these cookies tonight. Touchdown on the cookie decorating!
those cookies would look a whole lot better in BLACK AND GOLD!
Getta loada you! You’re a cookie monster! LOVE IT!
First of all, those cookies are stinking adorable!
Secondly, I hate the Ravens. We Browns fans still harbor ill feelings. BUT… it’s football season finally and ain’t it great!
Love the cookies! Good luck Monday night!
WOW!! What a ton of work you put into those – especially the hand-painted helmet logos! GREAT WORK!
Yes, I’m ready for some football! I love college football…and well, any sport that forces me to eat nachos and chili! :)
Your cookies are fabulous!!! A RAVEN!!! Whoa! Jen! You are one brave, and very talented, woman!
Gorgeous cookies; you are so talented! I am DEFINITELY ready for some football. Hubby is from Ohio so he is a huge Browns fan, so I root for them too…which is good for me because if I ever made these cookies, I think they are the only team I could handle. ;-)
I am cheering for the Ravens tonight! Love your cookies!
I’m not a big football fan but I am a HUGE fan of these cookies. They looks amazing!
Way to stick to your team Jen! They turned out fantastic, totally worth all that detailed work. I might have to give these a try however, I will need Cardinal Red, Metallic Gold, Black, White… go 49ers! ;)
Those Ravens look great! It has taken me a few years to appreciate, but after learning about the game I’ve gotta admit I’ve been ready for some football!!
Awesome looking cookies! Although I have to admit I’m not a football fan. Since I grew up in Ohio I sorta have to root for the Browns but that goes no where fast. They are not the best…haha.
These look great! How did you fill in the icing and get it so smooth? I would love to make some for this weekend.
Britany – The smooth icing is called flood icing. You pipe a stiff border and then fill it in with a thinned out flood icing that dries smooth.
GO RAVENS! I love those cookies – so cute!
we are big football fans – our son plays. I do the boys numbers and colors on football shaped cookies. I use decorator icing and pipe their numbers on and do “coach” on some for our amazing coaches. I wanted to tell you how wonderful your cookies are. I know how much time you put into them – they look awesome.
Jen your decorating skills just keep on getting better and better – well done!
