I don’t need to tell you that I love to cook on the grill… You already know that.
I probably don’t need to tell you that I love burgers, either. They are a summertime staple at my house, and with Memorial Day just around the corner, I thought it would be fun to share my basic burger recipe with you! Sure, I enjoy creative burgers with lots of flavors and toppings, but sometimes a plain old cheeseburger is what I really want. Plus, a good burger recipe is like a blank canvas for all kinds of new creations!
Before I get to the recipe, I have a bit of an announcement…
Sam’s Club has given me the opportunity to give away a shiny new (candy apple red!!) patio grill!
So, if you don’t have a grill or need to replace a grill that has seen better days, this could be your lucky day. Here’s a bit more information about the grill…
The Sam’s Club 2010 Patio Grill is everything you need for small to medium size cookouts, while taking up a minimum of space. This year’s model has a 60% increase in BTU’s (26,000), and has a 33% larger cooking area than last year. The shelves fold down and it comes with a cover and has wheels for easy storage. It comes with a warming rack. It uses a full size LP tank, unlike some other portable grills. We have had a ton of comments on how unique and sleek the styling is.
It has been a real hit with people who have limited space, and retirees who like the size.
Here’s how you can win…
Simply leave a comment on this post telling me about your favorite thing to cook on the grill during the summer! It’s that easy… You will have until next Monday, May 24th at 10:00pm EST to enter the giveaway. The winner will be selected randomly and announced next Tuesday!
I will also be announcing ways that you can get additional entries in the giveaway throughout the week, so stay posted!
Please note – Due to the nature and size of the item being given away, only U.S. residents are eligible to win.
Sam’s Club provided me with a complimentary membership a few months ago. I was initially shocked (and somewhat amused) by the enormous sizes of some of the “economy-sized” items… For example, I am still amazed by the single can of tuna that is bigger than my head. At first I wasn’t sure that Sam’s Club would be for me… After all, I primarily cook from scratch and I really don’t use many prepared foods in my kitchen. I don’t buy giant economy sized boxes of cereal or giant cases of soda, but I have found that it’s possible to buy great ingredients at Sam’s Club! I am a big fan of the boxes of organic spring mix and spinach in the produce section (which is a great buy, at about half the price of the same stuff at my local grocery store). I have also found some good deals on baking ingredients, nuts, and spices.
Sam’s Club also has some great recipes and tips in the Let’s Eat portion of their site. I especially like the marinade recipes… Making your own marinades (instead of buying a bottled marinade)
is a great way to control the flavors and quality of ingredients (i.e. no HFCS) when you’re cooking on the grill this summer. Plus, they’re quick and easy!
Now… Let’s get to that burger recipe!
Basic Burgers
- 1 pound lean ground beef (I typically use 90/10)
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon Montreal Steak Seasoning (or other grill seasoning)
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
Gently combine the beef, egg, seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, and bread crumbs in a large mixing bowl, using your fingers. Don’t over work the meat or it may become tough. Once all of the ingredients are incorporated, divide the mixture into four equal portions, and shape into burger patties, pressing down a bit in the center to help the burgers cook evenly.
Cook to your desired temperature (I like my burgers medium-well) on the grill, a grill pan, or on a skillet. Top with your favorite toppings, and enjoy!
Now that you have my basic burger recipe, don’t forget to leave a comment about your favorite grilling recipe for a chance to win the pretty red grill… And, stop back all week for more ways to win!
(Please note – The grill giveaway has ended and comments will no longer be accepted on this post.)

I love grilling chicken that has been marinated in italian dressing … at least overnight or 2-3 days is tasty !!
I love just about everything on the grill but my favorite is Beef. Hamburgers, beef hot dogs, beef kielbasa and beef kabobs have been my favorite since I was a kid.
I would love to have a grill to cook outside again; it just tastes better.
Well I am not eligible to win but tweeted about it anyway. Good looking burger you have there!
If I had to pick a favorite it’d be my Thanksgiving ham in a horseradish/brown sugar glaze. Mmmmm.
love grilling fruit: peaches, plums, nectarines…yumm, makes my mouth water =D
I would have to say that we love lamb on the grill. I would never turn down a juicy hamburger cooked on the grill though.
My favorite thing to grill is beer-butt chicken. I use italian dressing lavished with herbs and garlic instead of the beer, though. I also use a non-aluminum container to prop the chicken up. Yummy!
Your burger recipe is almost exactly like mine! Mmmmm…
I never include an egg in my meat with the fear of the egg not getting cooked enough if I were to keep my burgers medium-rare or even medium.
Is this an issue? Does anyone have any insight they could share with me on this?
My burgers tend to not hold together too well without the egg as a binding agent. Are there alternatives to the egg?
Thanks!
There is nothing like a big juicy strip steak grilled to a perfect medium rare.
We love burgers over here….what an amazing giveaway!!
My favorite “On The Grill” summer dish is baby back ribs and corn on the cob.
My favorite grill food for the summer is red snapper.
On a large aluminum pan with shallow sides I place 6 to 8 red snapper filets. Season liberally with cajun seasoning on both sides. Slice red, yellow and green bell peppers into rings and dice up the scraps. Place this over the top of the fish and then pour a bottle of Zesty Italian Dressing all over the pan. Place on grill and fish is done when flaky in the center. You can close the lid in the last few minutes if you want to get the smoked flavor. Delicious, light and very easy. Any firm white fish would work. Yum.
My favorite thing to grill are BBQ chicken thighs. Partly because they are so good and juicy cooked this way, but it’s also an excuse to cook with my Dad.
This is my first time visiting your site! Added you to Google Reader among my mnay other favorite bloggers! We love to grill jalapeno peppers that are stuffed with pineapple cream cheese, wrapped in a half piece of bacon and then rolled in brown sugar! Divine!
I don’t have much experience grilling, only burgers, but I’d LOVE to grill pizza!
I love grilling:
-corn
-sea bass
-salmon
-eggplant
-zucchini
Those are all my favorites- choosing only one of those would be too difficult!!!!!
Great giveaway!
I love grilling bone-in pork chops in an adobo sauce!
We try to bbq all parts of our meals on the grill during our warm weather….even in our not so nice weather. Thanks for the blog.
Mmmmmm, so many yummy grillables to choose from, but my fave is definitely shish kabobs!!
My husband and I also love grilling. We’ve been known to bundle up, even when the weather is bad here in Kansas, because we’re craving that awesome “grilled” flavor. I think our ultimate favorite is marinated stakes and zucchini. It’s hard to beat a fresh-from-the-garden zucchini on the grill!
There’s nothing better on a grill than fresh salmon! Especially if you can get one of those soaked cedar planks to smoke it on, mmmmm…
One of my favorites is grilled tuna steaks, with a west African spice rub!
I love to grill turkey burgers!
I love mesquite grilled steak, marinated beforehand in wine and spices. Yummmm.
Slow cooked ribs with homemade BBQ sauce and corn on the Cobb grilled in the husk.mmmmmmm.
Nothing beats a grilled porterhouse medium rare with a bouillon onion and grilled potato for sides..I think that will be Saturday’s menu. Get giveaway and blog.
There is nothing better then grilled vegetables (squash, bell peppers, zucchini and red onions) on the grill. My favorite is to combine these with chicken breast or steak for amazing kabobs. This is a summer classic at my house!
Asparagus!
nice KISS recipe. think i just might do burgers this weekend.
My summer food safety tip? I never ever leave anything outside longer than it absolutely needs to be. I’m so scared of food sitting out in the sun!
My summer food safety tip (although it applies year-round) is to wash your hands before handling food (and after handling raw meat)!
Awesome giveaway! I love cooking fish & veggies in tin foil on the grill – comes out perfectly every time!
Food Safety: This is somewhat obvious but I’ve seen it happen. Turn the gas on before the grill burners. This way the grill will not nearly blow up.
And now a real safety tip: thaw frozen meat in the refrigerator, as opposed to on the counter for 6+ hours.
my fave thing to grill has to be spring veggies in a grill basket with some sea salt and olive oil. YUM!
My favorite thing to grill during summer is a nice thick ribeye! Yummy!!
One of my most favorite things to cook on the grill are artichokes. And they are amazingly easy to do. Just steam them tilll done, cut in half and remove the choke and then marinate overnight in olive oil, lemon juice, red wine vinegar, garlic, herbs de provence and s&p. Grill over medium high heat till they have grill marks and are warmed through. Yum!
We’re huge fans of grilling! Marinated chicken is a weekly event and burgers are always great, but we love spiced veggies the best. Our grill died, so a new one would be great!
We love grilling chicken and burgers and fresh pineapple for dessert. Yum!
We love doing kabobs on the grill, and love grilled veggies as well. Especially purple onions, cherry tomatoes, peppers, and corn. I want to try baking a potato on the grill as well. Thank you!
New York Strip Steak with Dales seasoning!
Really need a new grill so I’m crossing my fingers=)
We love grilling spicy southern barbecue ribs on the grill. It is an all day process and act of love!
the best thing, is a mixture of meats all meat all the time!!! prime rib, baby back ribs with a sweat honey bbq sauce topped with grilled shrimp, and mushrooms, with a side off lemon grilled chicken with a slight lemon pepper glaze, or even better, whole chicken stuffed with your fav, stuffing and your choice of bear can heat it up and let it explode and the juices just drip off the meat.. ok, now im hungry.
One of the best aspects of summer: grilling! :D My favorite food to grill is marinated vegetable kabobs.
My favorite thing to grill: marinated, honey-glazed chicken wings!
Favorite thing to grill=BISON BURGERS!!!
I love to grill corn on the cob and bananas stuffed with chocolate and coconut. Fast, easy and sooo good!
Last summer our fav thing to grill ended up being CORN! and then we would slater it with sour cream and sprinking chili pepper on it!
So freaking fantastic!!!
Love the burger recipe – bookmarked to make soon!! But right now we don’t have a grill!! :(
