As a food blogger, I am especially passionate about fighting hunger. I am fortunate enough to not have to worry about where my next meal is coming from, but I know that not everyone is that lucky. In fact, there are many people, even in my small community, who are struggling to make ends meet and struggle to put food on the table for their families. I will always remember the look I saw on one mother’s face one day while I was shopping at the grocery store. I could see the worry and stress on her face as she was checking out at the register, trying to decide what food to put back so that she could afford the groceries for the small children who were tagging along while she shopped. It broke my heart. I often think of that mother, and I feel that it is my responsibility to do everything I can to share my blessings and help those who have not been as fortunate as I have.
Share Our Strength is an organization whose goal is to end childhood hunger in America by 2015. It’s a pretty bold mission, but it is one that I believe is achievable. I have enjoyed being involved in various events to support Share Our Strength over the past year, and I look forward to continuing to be involved in the future!
Great American Bake Sale
I first got involved with Share Our Strength through the Great American Bake Sale. Since I love to bake, it’s a great way for me to donate my time and talents to help in the fight against hunger. During the spring of 2009, I held my first bake sale at my neighborhood yard sale, and it was an amazing experience!
In 2010, I helped to organize the Central PA bake sale as a part of the National Food Bloggers Bake Sale. The bake sale was be a part of a national event organized by food bloggers across the country to raise money for Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale! View all of the details about the Central PA sale here.
During the spring of 2010, I also held another bake sale during my community yard sale, and I plan to do it again in the upcoming bake sale season!
#SOSFood Twitter Chats
The #SOSFood chat is a Twitter chat to build online community in the fight against hunger and raise awareness about upcoming Share Our Strength events. It’s a great place to meet new bloggers and help to support the fight against hunger at the same time. I have participated in the chats for a while, and have moderated many of the chats, as well.
12 Days of Cookies
The 12 Days of Cookies was a blogger organized event during the 2009 holiday season. Bloggers contributed family recipes to a virtual cookie jar and helped to raise money. I hosted one day of the event, and I look forward to participating in the years to come!
